Next Steps is a monthly program offered at The 519 to LGBTQ+ convention refugee and permanent residents. This monthly program has 3 components:

  • Application Clinics

Settlement Workshops

Our Settlement Workshops are educational and skills-based workshops that are offered on the first Wednesday of every month from 7pm to 9pm. These workshops support and inform LGBTQ-identified convention refugees and permanent residents on the process of settling in Canada. Workshop topic can include: legal issues, physical health and mental health, housing, finance and banking, and social isolation. These workshops also offer participants an opportunity to interact with and build community with other LGBTQ-identified newcomers, in order to reduce social isolation, and provide continued community supports. A light meal is offered.

Application Clinics

Our Application Clinics run on the second and third Wednesday of each month and provide support to LGBTQ-identified convention refugees who want to apply for Permanent Residency and to LGBTQ-identified permanent residents who want to apply for Citizenship. Application Clinics are pre-registered workshops for up to 4 individuals (or partners) to learn the skills and tools needed to complete these important application forms. Workshop participants are provided with a step-by-step guide and the opportunity to work on the applications in a group setting and have their questions answered by the facilitator. These are offered in English and Spanish.

Breakthrough

Breakthrough social events are facilitated by The 519 several times per year to provide a social space for LGBTQ-identified convention refugees and permanent residents to continue to build and strengthen social supports within LGBTQ+ newcomer communities. These events are centred on navigating the city and participating in interactive activities. In the past, social events have included movie nights, talent shows, drag queen bingo, cultural events and sports & recreation events offered throughout the city.
